Living an erotic life asks many things of us. One of the most fundamental requests Eros makes is that we do not take the world we live in, the world of appearances, at face value. The world of appearances trains our attention to see beneath the facades and skin-deep presentations it offers us. By doing so, we become intimate with everything this world says must be hidden away—desire, shame, true motivations, the tender parts of ourselves. We gain entry to the world of the soul, of essences and depth, and of the uncontrollable humanity that we try futilely to live without or humbly learn to live with. Fortunately, Eros has an in-born feedback mechanism that tells us when we have mistaken the appearance for the real thing: though we may get some kind of result, we won’t get the intimacy we want.
The quality of our relationship with the essence of things is dependent on how clearly we can see into them. Eros is interested in quality. Our least evolved response in relationship with life is to use more pressure: Say it louder, push it further, grip it harder. While there is a time and place for more pressure, the key to finding the highest quality relationship is to use more attention, not more pressure. We want to find out what it wants to be, not impose our ideas of what we want it to be upon it.
In OM, we stroke for resonance first and foremost using more attention than pressure. As we practice, we will begin to sense when something wants to open—a bundle of nerves on the clitoris or a feeling within our body being gently stroked open by the friction we feel at the point of contact. We make sure to brush rather than rub the clitoris, and to notice when we want to go harder and faster to produce more sensation instead of giving it room to emerge with a slower, lighter stroke.
