Our notions of power are rooted in a limited understanding of the interdependent nature of life. Both “power over” and “giving up one’s power” are illusory experiences that create a false sense of resolution. They lock us into conceptual hierarchies, separate us from the uncomfortably open-ended and uncertain feeling that we are co-creating life with each other
Outside of these limitations we see life as a never-ending collaboration of give and take. We get lost in the smokescreen of procedures and processes aimed at protecting, not recognizing the nobility and resilience in each human being. When we do this, we are colluding with the separation that creates delusion.
Eros has no delusional powerlessness. It insists we all have the capacity for self-determination. That we are all responsible for how we receive life, that the Erotic is available to us at all times and in all places regardless of our preconceptions about our experience. Eros runs through us unpredictably; we simply turn on and tap into it. Eros seats us in the middle of true power. It is a gravity that moves everything around it. It cannot be forced to move.
It allows us to invite others in, instead of keeping them out. It is the sharpest sword and the fierceness in our heart. Eros will not tiptoe, skirt, or bow to the pressure of our perceived powerlessness.
Eros gives us the capacity to be with pain, our own or others’, without trying to fix it. It recognizes that if we are powerless, it is because we have denied the power it has offered, that there is no need for pity, and that it respects when we have made a choice.
Those who perceive themselves as powerless will do everything they can to prove their case without recognizing it is not lack of power but spending their power on this cause that renders them perpetually powerless.
If we hold power, we will learn from trial and terror to avoid those who would not use it well. Eros is an intoxicant to many and a visioning tool for those who know how to use it well.
Eros is a power that is formidable and implacable. It says that nothing can be done to anyone. We often believe there are experiences we do not want to have. Eros will point out the power of our choice every time.
