The female power of volitional attraction: the concept of Call

Caroline Griggs and Rachel Pelletier

Abstract

Background. Some women report a volitional, conscious ability to draw the attention of others, called Call. Call is hypothesized to be universal in all women, but a concise instrument that adequately evaluates this innate ability does not currently exist. To address this gap, we created the Call scale and validated this scale. A secondary aim of this project is to assess how widespread the Call experience is based on this Call scale.

Method. We designed a 20-item questionnaire to measure Call with scores ranging from -60 to 60. We collected data from 2017 women in the US in a representative sample of the population. We also collected demographic data, a 10-item big five personality scale, and two other scales for validation purposes: the Sexual Esteem scale and the Cloninger Transcendence scale.

Results. We demonstrated convergent validity, reliability, and internal consistency of the Call scale (Cronbach’s alpha 0.89). We validated the scale showing above 0.4 correlation with both the Sexual Esteem scale and the Cloninger Transcendence scale. Factor analysis did not reveal relevant subscales. In terms of statistics of the answer to the call scale, only 25% of women obtained scores above 0 on the Call scale, showing that Call is only experienced and/or used by a small percentage of women. We also show that Call is positively correlated with personality traits such as extraversion and openness.

Conclusion. The Call questionnaire is a short, valid, and reliable instrument for evaluating women’s perceived innate ability to attract others.
