OM Training: Resonance

By Published: August, 2025

There are plenty of things we can do by ourselves. We can do sitting meditation. We can paint. We can take a long walk. We can dance. But we cannot partner dance. Alone, we can't tickle ourselves and we can’t sneak up on and surprise ourselves. Put another way, we can’t take ourselves out of control.

Resonance, by definition, requires an interactive pair—bow and violin, two or more voices, sunlight and plant etc. It’s an expression of complementariness, of matching. It takes another to resonate with us in order to let ourselves be attuned. When tuning an instrument, we need a standard of accuracy, otherwise how can we know a B flat from a B sharp? Humans “tune” into each other and biologically regulate each other with subtle cues, limbic resonance, and hormones that match all manner of states from hostile to relaxed to aroused. There seems to be something powerful about being connected.

With an erotic consciousness, we develop a relaxed, fluid nervous system that can receive and respond in pitch-perfect resonance to stimuli that it encounters. Our bodies are built for connection to others and our world.

We can only OM if we have somebody to OM with. We cannot OM with ourselves because there is no other body and consciousness to respond to. In OM, we explore the contours of the interdependent, mutually influencing world that opens when we link our nervous system with that of another.
